EN16630: the standard for outdoor fitness

The EN16630 standard is an essential reference for outdoor fitness equipment, defining safety and quality standards to be met. At Herkules, we are committed to guaranteeing the conformity of all our equipment, while supporting our customers at every stage of their project to meet these regulatory requirements. With Herkules, safety and quality always come first.

01.

Materials in the outdoor fitness standard

Standard EN16630 lays down strict rules to ensure that outdoor fitness equipment is both safe and easy to use. Each piece of equipment must have a simple design and be easy to understand, so that the user quickly knows how to position himself and what movements to make.

To avoid injuries, even in the event of misuse, the standard imposes several important rules:

  • Non-hazardous elements: No sharp or pointed edges should be present on equipment.
  • No risk of entrapment: Gaps between device parts must be less than 8 mm or greater than 25 mm to avoid any risk to fingers.
  • Nut protection : Nuts must be hidden or protected to prevent accidental contact.
  • Safe distance from moving parts: For safe operation, a clearance of at least 60 mm is required between moving parts and the floor.

These rules make EN16630 an essential framework for offering safe equipment suitable for outdoor use.

Equipment layout

Our outdoor fitness areas must be able to accommodate several users at the same time, safely and comfortably. That’s why it’s important to space the equipment properly, to ensure smooth, pleasant circulation.

In addition to comfort, the standard imposes a minimum safety distance of 150 cm between devices. This distance must be maintained not only between the fixtures themselves, but also between the fixtures and any nearby obstacles. This distance varies according to the fall height of the equipment.

Good to know: Safety zones can overlap, provided that no part of a device or nearby obstacle (such as a tree, fence or low wall) creates a hazard. This optimizes space without compromising user safety.

Technical data sheets can be downloaded directly from the product pages. They indicate the necessary fall heights and safety distances.

Drop height

The outdoor fitness standard lays down safety rules based on the fall height of equipment. This height corresponds to the maximum distance between the highest point accessible to the user and the ground. Accordingly, it’s important to choose suitable flooring to absorb impact and prevent injury.

For equipment with a high drop height, we recommend the use of shock-absorbing surfaces such as EPDM flexible flooring, shock-absorbing tiles or wood chips. These surfaces effectively absorb shocks and comply with current safety standards. For lower fall heights, other solutions such as asphalt, cobblestones or natural finishes may be suitable.

Herkules helps you choose the right solutions for every outdoor fitness standard, to guarantee the safety and compliance of your installations.

Regulatory display

Regulatory signage is essential to ensure compliance and inform users of outdoor fitness areas. It consists of two parts:

Each piece of equipment must have a specific display indicating: – Instructions for use to guide movements, – Restrictions such as age or weight, – Manufacturer’s or installer’s contact details to facilitate contact in case of need.

A clear, durable display makes for easy, safe operation of the equipment.
